There are so many fun traditions and activities this time of year. But as a parent you may be wondering how you can keep the focus on Jesus? I love this time of year and love doing ALL the things but I also try to be intentional with this time and make sure that God is at the forefront.
Do a Faith Based Advent Calendar
Advent Calendars can be so fun. And as much as my kids look forward to a gift or candy every day as they count down to Christmas I try to make sure they remember the true meaning of advent. This can be done in so many ways. You can do an Advent bible plan like the ones I shared in this post or you can read a book about the nativity story. Whatever works for your family.
Read Christian Christmas Books
We love to read and Christmas books are always on our list this time of year. There’s nothing wrong with the classic Christmas books about Santa. But, this is a great way to also incorporate stories about Jesus. There are some great books out there for kids that discuss Jesus’ birth and I know my girls get excited any time they see baby Jesus.
Do Faith Based Crafts
This is a fun one. You could make cross shaped ornaments or a birthday card for Jesus. The options are endless and this would be such a fun way to chat and discuss God’s special gift to us while also being creative.
Attend a Church Service on Christmas Eve
We love attending a service on Christmas Eve. It’s such a great reminder of why we celebrate. I think it is such a special time and a great way to get in the Christmas spirit.
Watch Christian Christmas Movies
I am ALL about watching Christmas movies. And we do not go a year without watching certain ones (check out my list of Must Watch Christmas movies). Try turning on a Christian Christmas movie one night, pop some popcorn or make hot chocolate and enjoy it as a family!
Do a Bible Study Together
Bible Studies are a great way to gather as a family and be in the Word to start or end your day. A routine like this is a great way to keep your hearts in the right place throughout the season. There are a lot of family friendly Bible Study plans to choose from on the Bible App, check out some I talked about here.
Put on a Nativity Play in your Living Room
This is a fun one! Some kids may do a play at their church but how fun would it be for the family to put on a Nativity play in the living room. Everyone gets a role (or more) and you just have fun with it. You could record it or put the play on for other family members. Either way it is a great way to bond over the story of Christ’s birth.
Keep the Dialogue Open in your Home
One of the best ways to keep the focus on Jesus is to talk about it! Every day. We should be showing our children what it means to seek God throughout the day. So having conversation about Him as much as possible, especially this time of year, is a great way to teach that.
I hope this list is helpful for any parents out there wanting to keep the focus on Jesus this Christmas. I love this time of year so much and all of the great things our kids can learn and do. Keep it fun and and simple and it will go a long way!
