So yesterday I shared a few Christmas advent devotionals to try out. And since we are on the topic of advent I wanted to take the time to share what I do for my girls’ advent calendars. We currently use these adorable houses with 24 drawers to countdown to Christmas. Each drawer is the perfect size for a small piece of candy or toy.
I got these advent calendars for Christmas in 2020. So this is the second year we are using them. They are super cute and they light up. When I purchased them they were actually unpainted. So I loved painting them and making them cute for the girls. Check out a few similar calendars below:
How we use our Advent Calendars:
So, having an advent calendar is super fun for the girls. They look forward to it every day of December. Mainly because there is usually candy involved. But I try to make sure their advent calendars are more than just a candy or small gift every day. I want it to be meaningful.
I also want to keep it simple for them though. So right now what I do is put a piece of candy and a note in each drawer. The note can be a scripture, an affirmation or a question. But the idea is to encourage them and remind them that they are loved. I want them to know that Christmas is more than yummy treats and presents so I am passionate about making our experiences intentional.
The girls look forward to their note every day and get so excited for me to read it to them. It is super simple and they can all be written down in one sitting. I typically grab small candies that will fit perfectly and get it all set up in one night.
This is a really fun tradition to do every year and I definitely recommend including it if you aren’t already. It can be as faith based as you want or just a fun thing to do with your kids. It’s a fun and easy way to make the countdown to Christmas that much more exciting for you kids.
